Final Critique

Did everyone enjoy the final critique? Could you see yourself working on future assignments like the ones that were presented in this class? Were you happy with your final project? Do you think your respective would use your brochure as their official brochure?
I just want to say that I enjoyed everyone’s brochures because they all were amazing. Look at how far we’ve come from the first day of class to where we are now. I’m happy with my final project because this experience was more than a class for me. Initially I took this class because I needed the credit, but I enjoyed taking this class this semester. This class presented a comfortable and engaging culture which I loved. It was more of an evolution of my artistic skills. I now have the skills to complete these projects in the future. I would love it if the Strong Museum used my brochure as their official brochure. I would be on cloud nine if they choose my brochure for their official brochure. I hope that my excitement and love came through with this project.
The Strong Museum is always going to be a part of me because I constantly went there as a kid, and I go whenever I get the chance to. As we get older and we continue to pursue our careers, we tend to lost things that made us who we are. This is one thing that I’ll never get bored of, and I always want the Strong Museum to be a part of my life. If I have kids in the future, I want to share this awesome place with them as well. I can’t wait to go back next summer. Experiencing the Strong Museum every year can become a routine for me. Rochester, here I come!

Least Favorite Project?

What was your least favorite project from this semester? I think everyone knows what my least favorite project is. Image and Text is definitely my least favorite project for a number of reasons.
I couldn’t figure out how to fit all of the text from the various articles into one coherent piece. For those who were able to use one of the more difficult text documents into a visually appealing piece, I applaud. I also couldn’t figure what colors I wanted to use. It was a complete mess.
For my project, I decided to use the pumpkin story because it seemed like the easiest one to do. You don’t realize how your poster is until it’s printed and presented on foam core. That’s the one thing you have to have when you compost graphic designs, and that’s confidence. Without confidence in your piece of art, it will fall completely on its face. I think that’s the reason this project turned out the way it did was due to a lack of confidence. I didn’t know how to use the software at the time, but I continue to make improvements every day.
In retrospect, I think I would have chosen a different template to work with because I didn’t like how my final project came out. I learned something valuable from this project though. I learned that the best designs are the ones that you are truly proud of, and they don’t have to be overly complicated. By sticking with that idea, I was able to produce better projects down the line. This is one project that I don’t want to ever see again. I’ll throw it in my closet, and I’ll stumble across it again one day. I also have the software at home so who knows, I might take another stab at it if I have some free time.

Favorite Project?

As we come to a close for this semester, what was your favorite project? It’s tough for me to say because I really enjoyed the Instant Book Project and the Poster project the same. I think I’ll give the nod to the poster project because it was the most expressive.
You could do whatever you wanted for the Instant Book project, but the Poster Project had more meaning to it. I decided to primarily focus my poster project on stealing digital files because companies have to reevaluate themselves due to the fact that so many people steal digital files on a consistent basis. By downloading files, you’re not only hurting the industry but you’re also hurting all of the fans as well. This isn’t a new problem that occurred over night. Illegal downloading has been going on since the early 2000s with Napster. We know what happened to that company. Downloading a file here and there might not seem like a huge problem, but you have to think about it this way. Put yourself in the artists’ shoes. If you spent all of your time and effort in creating this masterpiece, would you want people to rip you off and not pay you for work? Money isn’t everything, but it could help you produce your next project or support you financially.
Legal distribution might be the answer to the downloading problems, but people will always find a way around it. I felt this topic was relevant so I’m glad I decided to follow through with it. Everyone has downloaded at least once in their due to the convenience of it. A ten year old kid could log into any computer and start downloading files in an instant. It shouldn’t be that easy. That’s what I call Designing with a Conscience.

Least Favorite Exercise?

Going along with the theme from the previous post, what was your least favorite exercise and why? This one is a no brainer for me. I couldn’t stand the exquisite corpse exercise. Once I completed the exercise, I realized that my final piece didn’t look anything like the example from the website.
The first reason I couldn’t stand this exercise is due to the number of directions you had to follow, and then I was really upset that the people on the site didn’t even do half of the steps in their final example. How can you expect anyone to create a similar piece of art if you don’t provide the proper instructions? That just doesn’t make sense to me whatsoever. For example let’s say that you had to rotate an image or change the filter on the image, they completely omitted one of those steps from their final example. I would sit there and wonder why my final example didn’t come out like the one that was pictured. This is the only exercise where they “forgot” to do some of the steps. I remember they did the same for the Type on a Grid exercise, but that exercise wasn’t as annoying as this one was.
Talk about leading by example… The only way we found that out what to do due to the fact that one of my fellow classmates noticed the error as she was finishing the exercise. I’m sorry I don’t remember your name, it was so long ago. I would not recommend this project to anyone for whatsoever reason. Take it from me, avoid this exercise at all costs. I had access to the software at home, and it still took me hours to figure out what I was supposed to do. I had to constantly ask for help with this exercise.

Favorite Exercise?

What was your favorite exercise and why? I actually had to look through the previous exercises and see which one I enjoyed the most. I honestly forgot what exercises we did because we didn’t have to do them in a long time. I think the “Type on a Grid” exercise was my favorite exercise for various reasons. I couldn’t remember reading any of the instructions for the other exercises and thinking, “I can’t wait to get started on this one.” This exercise intrigued me from the beginning.
The first reason I enjoyed this exercise is due to the fact that it seemed the most practical in a sense that I would actually use it in a real world environment. I could possibly see a company asking one of use to make a striking design for a newsletter or some other publication. Whenever you think about a company or business, the main thing that sticks out in your mind is their logo or image design that sets them apart from everyone else. That image will make a lasting impression with anyone. The second reason this was my favorite exercise is due to the fact that I had the most fun with it. A lot of the other exercises just seemed time consuming, and they weren’t as fun as this one.
This exercise just got to the point as well. If I remember correctly there wasn’t a lot of background information associated with this project. Most of the other exercises would give you too much background information where it became a chore just to even get through the directions as well. If they wanted to add a ton of background information to an exercise, they could’ve made a heading that said “Background.” That simple touch would’ve made these exercises a lot easier than mixing the instructions with the background information.

Need Help With Your Brochure?

How is your final project coming along? Are you facing a standstill, and you’re looking for some help? Where did the time go? Well I think I found the right website for you. It’s virtually impossible to escape brochures. Wherever you go, you will see a brochure for various companies and organizations. While I was snooping around the internet, I came across this helpful site.
This site is brought you to by the Brother Company. Brother This website will allow you to make free custom brochures so you can see what it looks like before you finally commit to a project. You don’t want to commit to a project if you are truly happy with it. If you didn't know, Brother also makes various types of printers as well. This website is great especially if you don’t have access to the Adobe software at home. Most of us don’t have access to the software when we’re on campus due to the machines being available on a small number of machines. I know what I want to do for my project, but I was just wanted to help others who might be stuck with their project.
I’m currently in a limbo where I don’t want to finish my final project. I have mixed feelings about it. I have to figure out what’s going on with my printer because I want to make sure it’s perfect before I go, and get my final brochure printed out. I don’t want my final project printed out, and there’s a typo or something on my brochure. The other side of me wants to get this project finished so I can focus on my winter break. I’m so tired of going to school right now. Good luck on your final projects! I can’t wait to see them next Tuesday.

Overall Progress

As the semester comes to a close, I feel that I have improved in this class in every single way. Does anyone think that we would’ve made it this far? Initially I didn’t know how to do many of the basic functions of InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. I’ve used Photoshop in the past, but I never did anything this in depth with it before. I couldn’t make a coherent piece of art to save my life. I now have the confidence to compose pieces of art that are more complicated. I mentioned this in a different post, but once you build on the skills you’ve started out with, you’ll amaze yourself at what you produce.
What used to be a stumbling block is now a challenge that I’m willing to tackle any way see fit. Graphic Communication isn’t hard, but you have to know what you want to express to the world or class, and you’ll be fine. This class showed me that you will hate your project, and then you’ll finally love it once you have finished it. I’ve felt that way so many times because I didn’t know what direction I wanted to take my project in. There was a few times where I would completely scrap a project so I could start over from scratch. Even doing that at times would cause more stress than it should have. I’m proud at everyone because we never completely gave up on a project no matter how stressful it was. I think my experience with this particular class would’ve been totally different if I took it with a different group of students.
We’re always helping each other out, and we’re not too critical during critiques. I want to say thank you to everyone who made this semester so awesome. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Final Project

Initially I didn’t know what I wanted to do for my project. It finally hit me after I viewed what some of the other students were doing. My girlfriend and I always go to Rochester for our summer vacation. Every year we make sure we go to the Strong Museum. It takes me back to when I was a child because I used to go there all of the time with the YMCA, and I enjoyed every minute of it. If you never been there, I highly suggest that you go whenever you get the chance to. You will have the time of your life!
The main reason why I love the Strong Museum is for the simple fact that you can do whatever you want, and have a good time while you do it. I honestly think the best exhibits to go to include the video game revolution area, or the Bernstain Bears area. I believe I read all of those books as a kid, and I would honestly go back and read all of them if I had the time to. I really enjoy the video game revolution area because gaming has been a part of my life since I was two years, and it will always be a part of my life. They constantly add new areas to the museum as well. They recently added a Dora the Explora area, and they just announced they added a new Star Wars exhibit. I’m going to go back soon!
I enjoy it now because I can go where I want, and I can choose to stay in one exhibit longer if I want to. It’s a much better experience. I was glad I was able to share that part of my childhood with my girlfriend because she never went to the Strong Museum before we went. What did everyone choose to do for their project?

End of the Poster Saga

I was truly impressed with all of the posters that everyone presented. I couldn’t believe where I drew my inspiration from. I was putting back some returns at work, and I passed by this copy of Batman the animated series. I can’t find the exact title, but I shared the following photo. It’s the Batman costume in the middle.
In retrospect, I wished I spelled Pirates of the Caribbean correctly but I was pleased with the outcome. I couldn’t believe that I misspelled Caribbean. I didn’t notice it until I took a final look at my project right before I presented my project. I’m glad that I chose to experiment with color for this project. The color and the text really came together as one. My poster stood out from the other posters, and I'm proud of that. The reason my poster was different from everybody else is due to the fact that I used a lot of text for my poster. The added text truly drives the point home. I think my main point stuck with a few people because most of my classmates read the poster board over and over.
I believe this is my best work, and I wouldn’t change anything about this project. I can’t believe that the end of the semester is upon us. It seems like yesterday that we were composing our initials projects, and we didn’t know how to use the programs fully. I can’t wait to see what everyone produces for their final project. For my final project, I’m going to make a brochure that features photos from the Strong Museum. I’ve always loved the Strong Museum because I used to go there all of the time with the YMCA. I don’t care how old I get, I will always love going to the Strong Museum. That will never change.

Instantly Done!

Now that the instant book project is done, I'm looking forward to the next project. Initially I didn't know what I wanted to do for my instant book. There’s a possibility that the project was so open ended that I didn't know what I wanted to do. I thought I was going to do my story about the people who are no longer with me, but that would've ended up being really sad. I was going to focus on my brother who is no longer here, but then I decided to do a story that's completely about me. I think about him all of the time, and it’s hard to think that I didn’t know him that well because I was so young.
In my story, I wanted to emphasize some things in my life. Those few aspects allow the viewers to get a small preview into my life. I wanted to focus primarily on my job, my home life, and one of my favorite restaurants. Nowadays my life is so busy that I don't know what's going on sometimes. That's why I enjoy the small things in life because sometimes I feel that my life is going by me too fast. Just to give you some insight on how fast my life is going by me, if I’m not working on school work, I’m working at Best Buy full time. Some days I just enjoy sitting around the house and doing nothing at all.
With that being said, I don't know what I want to focus on for my next project. I thought about making a poster that stood against piracy. Piracy is the main thing that's killing the industry nowadays. Companies lost so much money due to internet piracy. I still might do this for my project. I'll think about it over the next few days.

Instant Book Assignment

Our next assignment is the Instant Book project. A black and white assignment will leave much to be desired in a good way. Black and white makes the viewer wonder what colors were used in the photo, but that’s a good thing. Everyone is not going to have the same interpretation reaction to your project.
It’ll be interesting to see how the final piece will turn out for everyone. I will begin to think of ideas of what I want to do. There are so many directions that this project could go in. I think it’ll be a good thing to have more class time to work on these projects. Maybe it’ll eliminate all of those previous problems that many students have run into in the past.
I think I know what I want to do my instant book. I want to make an instant book where people can have an inside look in my life. I want to focus on three main points. I want to show two pictures that showcase my house. The next set of photos will focus on where I work. My last se of photos will focus on one of my favorite restaurants.
Most college students live a private life where most of their classmates don’t get to see the personal side of you. With the instant book project, students will be able to find out what’s going on in your life. This project will allow you to choose whatever you want to do. This project is way better than the last one because it’s easier to find a concept that inspires you instead of having to do a project where you only have three choices to choose from. I can’t wait to venture out, and take the photos I need. Who else is excited for this project?

No More Exercises!

We don't have any exercises left. I have the A. Earhart project to do, but I’m not too sure if I'll do the optional exercises. The exercises were always the toughest parts of this class to me. I'm looking forward to the remaining projects because I can focus all of my time on the projects.
I think I’m going to blog about the progress of the projects from here on out. I don’t know why I would always stress out about the exercises, but I always did. I would always feel rushed to get them done, but I was able to finish them. The toughest exercise had to be the exquisite corpse. I had to do the exercise twice, and it still didn't come out right. I’m just glad that exercise is behind me now.
Without the stress of the exercises on my back, I should have an easier time at finishing the projects on time and more efficiently. It’s a shame that our website decided to go haywire during the middle of the semester, but maybe it’ll be a better experience for all of us. I mentioned in a previous post how hard it was for most students to get their hands on the software.
Class time will be dedicated primarily to finishing your current project which will help us make better projects. There are a few things that will result from better projects. Students will have higher level of confidence going forward. Creating graphic designs can be difficult at times. The second thing that will result from better projects are better critiques. Our critiques are phenomenal because we have an awesome group that gives excellent criticism. Initially we wanted get our projects over with so we can move onto the next project. Let’s just say we don’t have a problem with somebody who anxiously wants to go first.

Change One Thing

If you could change one thing about this class what would it be? Would it be the no eating rule? Would it be the class time we have to work on our projects? The only thing I would change is the availability of the Mac computers on campus.
Trying to find a Mac on campus is almost like searching for cheap clearance items at five different stores, and not finding any. Sure there are the labs, and there’s some in the library but that doesn’t mean that they’re always accessible. In the future the campus needs to look into getting more Mac computers on campus for this exact reason. Finding a Windows based computer isn’t tough at all, but a Mac on is near impossible.
I think some of the problems that we experience with our projects and exercises are due to the fact that we don’t have enough with the Mac computers. That’s just my opinion anyway. Due to the lack of useable machines, students tend to stress out because they don’t think they’ll finish their projects and exercises on time.
There is hope though. Some students have found a work around to alleviate this problem. If you go to Adobe.com, you can download a trial version of the software you need to use. The only issue with this work around is that you can only use the software for 30 days until you have to pay for it. The individual programs are pretty expensive, and most of us can’t afford to spend that kind of cash on computer software. We have other things to pay for.
As the semester goes on, maybe we’ll have better luck at getting our hands on the software. If we have more time to experiment with the software, we’ll be able to become more proficient with each program individually.

Check this site out!

The exploratorium has been providing great art websites since 1995. This particular page started out with ten cool websites, but people continue to add more sites to this page as well. If you are interested in any of the following artists; Dali, and lesso. You should definitely check this page out.

I think the best website on this page is My Imaginary City. At this site you can join an online community of people who love to create images that don't exist. I posted an awesome one below. Taken directly from the website. "Tate Collectives is an online space for young creatives. Create your profile and gallery space. Upload your own creative work. Share, discuss and collaborate with other young creatives here." What will they think of next!? There's also a social media aspect to this site because you can share your work with other sites, and people can like and leave comments about your work.

Has anyone checked out the site recently? The Exploratorium constantly updates their main page with new content along with new announcements. Their biggest announcement is that they’re moving in 2013. They’re building their new campus at Piers 15 and 17 on San Francisco’s historic waterfront. The following is their mission statement. “The Exploratorium isn’t just a museum; it’s an ongoing exploration of science, art, and human perception—a vast collection of online interactives, web features, activities, programs, and events that feed your curiosity.”
After viewing their website for some time, I want to visit this museum in the future. I’ve always been a fan of museums, and I definitely want to experience this museum to see what they have  to offer. If you haven’t checked the links I’ve posted, you’re definitely missing out on some great content. This site is definitely worth your time.

The Tools We Have

In Communication Graphics we have several tools at our disposal. We have the internet, and three excellent programs including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Each program has strengths and weaknesses.
So far InDesign is my favorite of the three to use. InDesign seems to be the most professional of the three because there’s so much you can do with it. I really enjoy how you can add multiple without any real issues. I've personally spent the most time with InDesign so I think that’s another reason why I prefer to use InDesign.
Illustrator on the other hand, not so much. Initially we used Illustrator for our exercises. The book has a weird way of describing the instructions to us. One minute you’ll be following along with the directions, and then they’ll suddenly stop you from what you were doing to tell you some background information. I think they should give you all the background information, and then get into the exercise. I honestly think that causes a lot of confusion.
Photoshop is the only program that I fooled around with during my high school years. I don’t know really how to use it, but I definitely want to learn some advanced features of it. I initially used Photoshop to re-size images for my cell phone wallpapers, but that’s all I did really with it.
I also mentioned the internet as a tool as well because without it, our projects and assignments would be much tougher. Just imagine having to go out and physically take photos for your magazine layout. That may or may not be fun for the rest of the students. I also love having a digital copy of the book online. I have having to carry a ton of books to each class so knowing that I can carry one digital book makes me a happy college student.

A Retrospective: Exercise 1

It's been over a month since I submitted this exercise in. It's always good to see where you started with something. I look back and think, "I could've changed this or that." Taking this type of class for the first time opened my eyes to things I never really paid attention to. Whenever I look at buildings, new canvases I always critique them. I then think what I could to improve or change the way it look.
When I started exercise 1, I didn't know what I was doing. Some of the instructions were so vague, and it's annoying when you find out that the author skipped a step as well. It just takes more time to keep your exercise on track. With the experience gained from that initial exercise, I know that it would definitely be easier to do this time around.
I’m really glad that I chose to take this class. I don't think my future will incorporate graphic design, but at least I'll have some background d knowledge of the software. Most of my classmates never used any of these programs so it’s amazing to see what hard work and dedication can do for a person. With that being said, I do look forward to seeing future projects. We all learn from our mistakes, and it’ll be good experience for all of us.
I can honestly say that I’m learning more of the features and techniques of InDesign and Illustrator. It’s a good feeling knowing you can manipulate your pieces of art in the way you intend to. By building on the basic features, you will be able to change your work in so many ways. Some people will be content using the basic features, and others will enjoy their classmates asking them for tips.

Latest Critique

After hearing some of the criticism I received, I can finally see where I need to improve my work. Some of my color choices didn't work too well, and I could've expanded on my title. My title was left in the middle all high and dry.
I think the reason my project came out the way it did was due to the fact that I was trying to do too much. I say that in a sense that I should've kept my project simple, and it would've turned out much better. Going further, I will try to tone things down a bit, but I still want to learn and experience new concepts and techniques. Things can only go up from here so I'm hoping that my next project turns out better than this one did.
The main thing that was frustrating about this project finding a Kinko's that would actually mount your magazine layout. I initially went to the Cheektowaga location because it's close to my job. After trying to get my flash drive to read, she then insisted to tell me that they didn't mount projects at that location. She then told me that I had to the Niagara Falls BLVD location. That location is nowhere near my house. Thanks Andrea! Andrea informed me that she went to the Elmwood location, and she didn't have any issues. I went there, and the printer chopped off most of my text. I then rushed home, and moved everything over. After emailing the store, I was able to mount my project. That was an experience to say the least. This project was so stressful because I had to get everything finished before I went to work.
Thanks again to everyone who gave me insightful criticism. I really appreciate your input. The other thing I didn’t like was the lack of communication of some of the co-workers at the FedEx locations. You would think that they would be more informed about what services they offered. It would’ve made things a lot easier.

Things Are Coming Together Nicely

I really enjoyed the critique regarding our initials project. It's always better to have someone else look at your work because they will notice things that you may have overlooked. Everyone gave great feedback, and the criticism was even better. No one flat out said, "what were you thinking when you did this project?" That would be intimidating. Anyone could tell that this was our first project because the creator would often say, "I didn't know how to do this, or I didn't know what type font to use." Once you figure out ways to manipulate your audience, you then realize you mastered the programs.
It's good that we are starting out slow instead of jumping into a complex project because many of us would be lost. That's how I felt about our project when it was first announced. I didn't get a chance to fool around with the software beforehand so I had to complete my project the day before our projects were due. It was very stressful, but it was a great learning experience.
As time progresses, I can see myself understanding InDesign and Illustrator much better than I did before. InDesign and Illustrator are complicated programs if you don’t know what you are doing. There are so many features built into each of the programs that you’ll be hard pressed if you can’t complete your intended design. The one great thing about using well known programs is that a lot of people put tutorials on video hosting sites such as YouTube and Vimeo. You can also get basic help with those programs through a simple Google search. Techniques are going to the basis of this class so it’ll be interesting to see what my classmates figure out on their own. I can't wait to see what we produce by the end of this class.

My Thoughts: Helvetica

Helvetica is more than a type font, it's a lifestyle. It surrounds us like air, and there's no way to escape. When you think about it, Helvetica isn't hard to miss. It's featured on menus, signs, brochures, buildings, street signs, college campuses, highway exits, and anywhere else imaginable. One of the first artist from the film stated, "Eat crap because it's on the corner." It was a reference to fast food restaurants, but he wanted to stress how often you could see Helvetica being used in everyday life.
The history behind Helvetica is quite interesting as well. Helvetica was born in the year 1957. Since then people have used it in various ways, and they even tried to change its shape and form. There were a few periods where Helvetica seemed abstract, and it became more edgy. During the 90's, artists turned Helvetica into this grunge type font that some people loved while others hated it. Nowadays people use various type fonts to make their work stand out, but Helvetica is definitely recognizable wherever you go.
I decided to watch a few more clips from the film, Helvetica, just to get a refresher. I stumbled across this quote that made me realize how good and relevant this movie is. This first quote is from Massimo Vignelli. "You can say, "I love you," in Helvetica. And you can say it with Helvetica Extra Light if you want to be really fancy. Or you can say it with the Extra Bold if it's really intensive and passionate, you know, and it might work." The way you choose to use Helvetica is up to you. You can say the simplest thing, and Helvetica can completely change the meaning. For that reason alone, Helvetica is one of the most important typefaces we have. People will continue to use Helvetica as long as it's relevant. I can't imagine a future where Helvetica isn't relevant.

Communication and Design

Why is it important for Communication majors to study design?

Communication majors have to study design because we have to realize that the devil's in the details. We have to know why something was constructed the way it was or why the artist chose to go in one direction instead of the other. The design of the product can say a lot about a single company or person. Regardless of what you do in your future, people will always remember how your design turned out. None of us are perfect if we take our time to carefully study something, we might see something there that we didn't notice before. By taking your time with a piece of art, you'll be able understand more about the piece, and you'll be able to have intelligent conversations about the piece as well. It's one thing to say, "that picture is nice." But it's better to say, "that picture is blooming with color." Small things like that will help you appreciate design in the long.
Good design ultimately boils down to two things. Having good design will allow your piece of art stand out, and it might actually help you sell your work to a respective client. Clients don't want to use tired and true methods to get their point across. Clients want ideas that are original, and stand out from the rest of the crowd. If clients stuck to the same ideas all of the time, the industry would fall flat on face. Nobody wants that at all. If there was no ingenuity, what would be the point of trying something new? You want people to pay close attention to your product instead of yawning at it, and moving onto the next piece. Good design can also inspire others to follow in your footsteps. We need innovation and good design in everything. You should take a step towards a different tomorrow.
My favorite piece of design would have to be billboards that stand out. Billboards I love billboards that stand out like ones mentioned in the link because they do their best to get their message across. Companies spend millions of dollars a year for advertising so if you remember their billboard, mission accomplished. This is most certainly true for home cleaning products. "That's the power of Pine-Sol, Baby." Everybody knows that quote because you think of all of the crazy commercials that are associated with it. That's effective advertising. As mentioned earlier, if you can remember a product based on its slogan, then the companies did the right thing. I really enjoy that quote because I'll always ask one of my friends if they used Pine-sol after they mop.
The first class was pretty awesome. I can't wait to see what else the rest of my classmates have to offer. They all seem lively, and happy to be there. Those two aspects alone make the class worth coming to every day!
